If QL9 is closed or unsafe, we postpone your seat to the next workable day at no extra charge, and if your visa is already tight we tell you straight away so you can decide between an earlier run or settling an overstay fine. In practice cancellations on this route are always about the road, never the border gate.
On the Lao side the gate is called Dansavanh international border gate, in Savannakhet province. You walk across the short bridge between the two immigration buildings into a small border town of duty-free shops, guesthouses and currency booths, with Highway Route 9 continuing west toward Savannakhet city about 60 km away. For a same-day run you only touch the first few hundred metres of Laos before turning around.
You walk, and that is normal everywhere on this border: passengers are processed on foot through the immigration halls while the vehicle is handled separately in the customs lane. Expect 200 to 400 metres of walking in total, including the stretch between the Vietnamese exit building and the Lao arrival desk, so bring shoes you can wear comfortably and keep your documents in a single folder you are holding.

What you should refuse politely is any request from a border official for an extra "stamping fee": show your receipt, stay with your guide, and pay nothing.

A private car is a flat rate for the whole vehicle (3,200,000 to 3,400,000 VND, up to five passengers), so three or four people travelling together usually pay less per person than four separate shared-van seats. A last-minute shared seat is the same published fare whenever a seat is available — we do not charge a panic premium for a seat that already exists. The cheapest legal combination is a shared van seat plus a visa-exemption or e-visa stamp you already hold, with Standard processing if you need a new e-visa filed while you are outside the country. Leave your bags at your hotel — almost every guesthouse in Da Nang stores luggage for a day at no cost — or bring a small daypack on the run, which fits in the van or boot without trouble. Do not plan to leave a motorbike at the border: there is no secure long-stay parking at the gate and we cannot take responsibility for one. If you are moving between cities, book the run as a city-to-city transfer instead.
No. Both Vietnam and Laos require import permits, microchip and rabies documentation and a veterinary certificate for any animal crossing the border, and none of that can be arranged on a same-day loop. The Lao Bao gate has no animal quarantine facility for travellers. If you are relocating with a pet, plan a booked, licensed pet transport weeks in advance and do your visa run separately.
Yes. A private car makes the day much easier: door-to-door pickup, reclining seats, air conditioning and the freedom to stop whenever you need. The walking inside the border buildings is roughly 200 to 400 metres, mostly flat, with a few steps at the entrances. Tell us in advance if you need extra time, a wheelchair or help carrying documents, and our fixers will slow the crossing and stay beside you at the counters.
Many do, and there is nothing in the route that is medically difficult — but it is 10 to 12 hours of sitting in a vehicle, so most doctors prefer it before the third trimester. A private car with extra stops and reclining seats is the sensible choice, and Da Nang's international clinics are used to writing notes for travel like this. If you are past 32 weeks, speak to your doctor first and tell us, so we can plan a slower day.
Our drivers know the medical facilities on the road: Hue and Dong Ha both have general hospitals, and Da Nang has international clinics such as Family Medical Practice and Vinmec with English-speaking staff. If you feel unwell before departure, cancel — a postponed run is cheaper than a border emergency. Carry any prescription medication in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription, and keep travel insurance current.
Neither government requires insurance for a same-day land loop, but we strongly recommend it. Most travel policies sold in Vietnam cover the drive, and the ones worth buying also cover the short Laos transit if you step beyond the border zone. Check the wording on motorbike use and pre-existing conditions, and keep the policy number and emergency phone line saved offline — mobile data drops out on parts of Highway QL9.
It is too tight to be sensible. A same-day run normally returns to Da Nang between 19:00 and 20:30, and any delay on QL9 pushes that later. Book a flight no earlier than 23:00 on the run day, or better, fly the next morning. If you already have a ticket, tell us the time when you book — we can sometimes run a private car with a tighter schedule, but we will not promise a same-day connection we cannot keep.
Yes, and it is one of the smartest ways to use the day. Because our cars pass through Hue and Hoi An anyway, you can be picked up in Da Nang, cross at Lao Bao and be dropped in Hue for the night, then continue at your own pace. Groups often run the loop in reverse — Hoi An in the morning, the border at midday, back to Da Nang by evening — and we arrange the whole sequence on one booking.
Yes — Nam Giang, in the south-west of Da Nang city, is the nearest land border to Laos at roughly 150 km and a 3.5 to 4.5 hour drive, against 290 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours for Lao Bao. Resolution 389/NQ-CP, published on 2 December 2025, put Nam Giang on the list of land gates that accept Vietnam e-visas, so it is now a legal way back into the country. It is not our standard route — Lao Bao is — but it is the one to ask about if a shorter day matters more to you than the Laos visa counter.
Yes. Nam Giang is one of the 11 land gates added when Vietnam's e-visa port list grew from 42 to 83 checkpoints under Resolution 389/NQ-CP of 2 December 2025, the same resolution that kept Lao Bao on the list. The catch is that the port name on your e-visa has to match the gate you actually use — "Nam Giang" for the Da Nang crossing, "Lao Bao" for ours. If they do not match, the counter cannot process the e-visa and you need a fresh application.
That is the weak point of every smaller gate. Laos publishes visa on arrival at Dansavanh, the checkpoint facing Lao Bao, but not at the crossings facing Nam Giang, La Lay or Bo Y, which see almost no tourist traffic — treat a Laos visa there as unconfirmed rather than likely. If your nationality needs a Laos visa, the Lao Bao border crossing is the one where the counter issues it on the spot, in cash US dollars, which is exactly why our Da Nang to Laos runs use it.
No. Laos issues its e-visa for a short list of ports — Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, the Thai–Lao Friendship Bridges, Khamsavath railway station and Boten on the China border — and the Vietnam–Laos land crossings are not on it. Dansavanh, opposite Lao Bao, is listed as visa on arrival only. So do not buy a Laos e-visa expecting to use it on the run: budget roughly 30 to 45 USD in clean cash at the counter instead.
La Lay is Quang Tri's second international gate, in Dakrong district at the end of a 12 km mountain stretch of National Highway 15D, facing La Lay in Salavan province, Laos. It is on the e-visa list, but the road there is narrow with hairpin bends and the gate handles coal and freight traffic, with lorries queuing for kilometres on peak days. For a Da Nang run it adds drive time without solving anything, and the Laos side is not a dependable visa-on-arrival counter.
Bo Y, in Ngoc Hoi district, Kon Tum, has been an established e-visa gate for years, and its Laos counterpart is Phou Keua in Attapeu. It is a long day from Da Nang — the drive south on QL14 and then west is further than the Lao Bao route in hours, not kilometres — and the Laos side is not a published visa-on-arrival checkpoint. Treat Bo Y as a fallback for a traveller already in the Central Highlands, not as a Da Nang alternative.
No. The Lao Bao border crossing is posted as open daily from 07:00 to 22:00, with the passenger window in practice about 07:00 to 19:00, because it is the East–West Economic Corridor crossing and freight keeps it staffed. The minor gates run shorter hours, sometimes with a lunch break and days when the counter is simply not manned for foreign passports, and that is how a ten-hour round trip becomes an overnight stop. If you plan to use one, confirm the hours the day before and carry a backup plan.
Three reasons: Laos visa on arrival is routine at Dansavanh, our fixers cross it every working day and know the officers by sight, and Dansavanh town gives us a hotel and a plan B when a stamp is delayed. Nam Giang is about 100 km closer but has no Laos visa counter you can depend on and no backup infrastructure if the return leg goes wrong. If you are based in the south-west of Da Nang and need nothing but a pre-approved e-visa entry, ask us and we will price that run separately.
Vietnam Customs sets two independent thresholds: USD 5,000 in foreign-currency cash, and VND 15,000,000 in dong, plus 300 g of gold. Crossing any of them means completing a customs declaration and using the red channel, on the way out or on the way back in — and the dong limit is the one runners trip over, because it is only about 570 USD. On a Da Nang visa run most travellers carry 2.5 to 3 million VND, comfortably under both lines.
Decree 169/2026, in force from 1 July 2026, tightened the customs penalties, with reported administrative fines of up to 50 million VND for an undeclared amount on exit and 20 million VND on entry. The declaration thresholds themselves did not change: USD 5,000 in foreign cash, VND 15,000,000 in dong, or 300 g of gold. If you are carrying more for a group booking or for the Da Nang to Laos leg after the run, fill in the form and use the red channel at the Lao Bao border crossing rather than risk losing the day.
Under Article 6 of Decree 134/2016, each traveller entering with a passport is exempt from import duty on 1.5 litres of alcohol at 20% ABV or more, or 2 litres below 20%, or 3 litres of beer and alcoholic drinks, plus 200 cigarettes or 250 g of loose tobacco or 20 cigars, per entry. The alcohol and tobacco allowances do not apply to anyone under 18. Anything above the allowance is declarable and taxable, which is the practical reason to keep Laos duty-free shopping small.
Yes, for personal use, kept in its original labelled packaging with the prescription or a doctor's letter, and in a quantity that matches the length of the trip rather than a year's supply. Vietnam restricts narcotic and psychotropic medicines to an approved, declared quantity, so anything in those categories needs the paperwork and a customs declaration behind it. Laos has its own restrictions, and since a same-day run keeps you in Laos for an hour there is never a reason to carry more than a few days' worth.
Personal electronics you carry for your own use — laptop, phone, camera — need no declaration on a same-day exit and re-entry, and nobody writes a form for a camera. Drones are the exception: flying one in Vietnam requires prior permission from the Ministry of National Defence and the civil aviation authority, and taking one into Laos needs its own approval, so the border is the worst place to discover that. Leave the drone at home unless you already hold the permissions.

The Laos visa-on-arrival counter is cash-only and turns away notes with tears, ink, stamps or deep creases, and there is no ATM at the gate or in Dansavanh to replace them — the nearest dependable one is back in Dong Ha, about 80 km away. Ask your bank for newer, clean notes before you fly, keep them flat in a separate pocket, and treat 30 to 45 USD as the amount you must have in acceptable condition.
There is a small duty-free shop on the Vietnam side of the crossing, and a same-day re-entry still counts as a fresh entry for customs, so the usual allowances apply: 1.5 litres of spirits, 200 cigarettes and personal-use quantities of everything else, with receipts worth keeping. Laos coffee, tea and snacks are the practical purchases and nobody questions a bag of coffee. Anything you would sell on in Vietnam is a different conversation, so keep it personal.
No. Vietnam banned the use and possession of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco from 1 January 2025, and Decree 371/2025 sets fines of 3 to 5 million VND plus confiscation of the device, so a vape in your bag at Lao Bao is a fine waiting to happen on either leg. Laos also restricts imports of vaping products. If you vape, leave the device at home for run day and pick it up when you are back in Da Nang.
Yes — the temporary residence declaration belongs to the address, not to the visa, so every new entry has to be reported at wherever you are sleeping. Since Circular 87/2026/TT-BCA took effect on 24 July 2026, hotels and guesthouses file electronically and must do it when you arrive, with no grace period at all, while private homes and small places without an account use the NA17 paper slip within 12 hours, or 24 hours in remote areas. There is no fee, the fine for a missing declaration lands on the host at 3 to 5 million VND for up to three guests, and your only duty is to hand over your passport and show the new stamp without being asked.
Yes. Your period of stay runs from the entry date stamped at Lao Bao, not from the date the e-visa was issued, and the officer should write an admitted-until date 90 days out. Photograph the page before you leave the counter, because the stamp is the only document that decides how long you may stay. If you re-entered on a 45-day visa-exemption stamp instead of an e-visa, the same rule applies with 45 days.
There is no legal annual cap — exiting and re-entering to get a new period of stay is lawful, and many long-stayers in central Vietnam live on it. What has changed is visibility: under Decree 286/2026 immigration shares data with other agencies in real time, so a pattern of back-to-back 90-day runs is much easier for an officer to see, and questions about income or onward plans become routine. Time the run 3 to 7 days before expiry, keep the record clean, and start planning a long-stay status after two or three consecutive runs.
Four runs a year on our standard package — 1,000,000 VND for the shared van seat, 2,400,000 VND for the 90-day e-visa service, and about 1,200,000 VND for the Laos visa on arrival — works out at roughly 4.6 million VND a run, near 18.4 million VND or about 700 USD a year. The cheapest legal version, filing your own e-visa on the official portal for the 25 USD government fee and taking the shared seat, lands nearer 3 million VND a run, around 460 USD a year. A private car at 3,200,000 VND per vehicle becomes the cheaper option per head as soon as two of you travel together.
The stamps themselves will not, because visa runs are legal — files are refused over overstays, unpaid fines and bans, not over a tidy series of entry and exit records. What does damage a future application is overstaying by even a day, ignoring an exit-suspension flag (Decree 252/2026 lets immigration stop a departure over unpaid tax debts), or picking up a refusal at the border, where the draft penalties under Decree 59/2026 allow bans of up to three years. Keep every stamp legible and your history reads as an ordinary long-stay visitor.
Yes, and it is the natural next step — a sponsoring company files the work permit, the TRC follows, and you stop running because the card carries your right to reside. Budget time rather than money: the file is processed in Da Nang, and Decree 283/2026, in force from 10 September 2026, fines the foreigner 15 to 25 million VND and the employer 30 to 75 million VND per head for working without a permit. If you work remotely for foreign clients, ask us about the 90-day multiple-entry e-visa route instead of a permit.
No. A Temporary Residence Card is your residence document and lets you leave and re-enter while it is valid, with no new stamp needed and no run at all. The 5-year visa exemption certificate works differently: it gives up to six months of temporary residence on each entry, and any extension is handled at immigration in Da Nang, so a border bounce is not the tool. If you hold either document and someone has sold you a run, get a second opinion first.
Keep the passport, obviously — the Laos entry and exit stamps plus the Vietnam entry stamp are your legal record — and photograph every page stamped that day, including the Laos visa sticker. Decree 286/2026 means the data is shared between agencies electronically, but having your own copies settles any question when a future e-visa, TRC or work permit file is reviewed, and they cost nothing. Never hand your passport to anyone at the border who is not in uniform behind a counter.

With an early departure you are dropped back at your hotel between 17:00 and 19:00, a full round trip of about 10 to 12 hours door to door. The private car is usually the earlier option because there is no shared-group collecting and dropping to do. Yes, but be conservative: do not book a domestic flight or an important meeting for the same evening unless you are in a private car and still leave a buffer, because QL9 and the QL1A can lose an hour to lorries, roadworks or weather. Of the 10 to 12 hour day, roughly 9 to 10 hours go on driving, eating and resting, and only about 1 to 1.5 hours are spent at the two counters — often under an hour on a clean morning. The long waits people describe at Lao Bao usually begin after 11:00, when the tour coaches and cargo arrive, which is exactly when our early departures have already cleared.
Yes, in almost all cases. The Lao Bao gate stays open until 19:00 for passengers (posted 22:00 for the crossing itself), so even a slow morning leaves hours of margin and our fixers push the crossing ahead of the queues. The real cut-off is re-entry timing: if a document problem drags past mid-afternoon we turn the trip into a two-day run with an overnight in Lao Bao town or Densavanh rather than risk an unfinished entry.
The fixer photographs every stamp — the Vietnam exit, the Laos entry and exit, and the new Vietnam entry — before you leave the border zone, then the drive home is the same road in reverse with one comfort stop. On the way in the dispatcher confirms your arrival window on WhatsApp, and after drop-off we check that the new entry stamp reads correctly, including the date, the allowed stay and the gate. If anything looks wrong within the first 24 hours, message the desk and we can still act on it.
Use a bank branch in the city centre — Vietcombank, BIDV, VietinBank and Agribank all have Hai Chau district offices that sell USD — or a licensed currency exchange, and ask specifically for clean, unmarked, untorn notes. The Densavanh visa-on-arrival counter and most Laos-side shops will refuse folded or torn bills, so inspect each note before you leave the counter. Change roughly 30 to 45 USD per person plus a small buffer, and keep it separate from your dong, which is what you use on the Vietnamese side.
Any copy shop (quan photocopy) will print a PDF for about 1,000 to 3,000 VND a page — the cluster around Han Market and on Le Dinh Duong and Nguyen Chi Thanh is the easiest, and most open early. Your hotel front desk can usually print it too if you send the file the night before, which is the simplest option before a 04:00 departure. Print a spare copy and keep the PDF saved offline on your phone for the signal gaps on QL9.
If your nationality buys a Laos visa on arrival at Densavanh you need one recent passport photo, and the counter standard is 4x6 cm, so carry two in case one is rejected. Photo studios across Da Nang, including around the market and near the airport, produce a set in about 15 minutes for roughly 40,000 to 80,000 VND. Even if you are Laos visa-exempt, a spare photo is cheap insurance for the day.
Four checks: at least six months' validity from your entry date, at least two blank pages for the Laos and Vietnam stamps, an intact machine-readable zone with no water damage, and the name and passport number matching your e-visa exactly. If any of those fails, the run can end at the counter after a five-hour drive. Send us a photo of your data page when you book and we will confirm it before you pay.
A passport with water damage, a delaminating cover or a faded data page is a genuine risk at Lao Bao, because Laos can refuse a visa-on-arrival sticker on a compromised document and Vietnam can question your re-entry, and fewer than two blank pages is a problem in its own right. The fix is a new passport first — from your embassy or consulate in Hanoi, or the relevant consulate in Ho Chi Minh City — and then either a fresh e-visa on the new number or the USD 5 document-transfer service inside Vietnam before you run. Your passport, the printed e-visa plus the offline PDF, one or two 4x6 cm photos, 30 to 45 USD in clean notes and your dong for the day, a phone with the booking chat open, a power bank, a refillable water bottle, a light long-sleeve layer for the cool Hai Van climb, and any prescription medicine in its original box. Keep it to one small bag that fits the van and never leaves your side at the border. Everything else — laptop, large luggage, spare valuables — stays locked at your Da Nang hotel.
Keep your passport and dollars in separate zipped pockets on your body, not in a loose daypack, so a single loss or theft cannot take both. At the counters, only hand your passport to a uniformed officer behind a desk — never to anyone outside who offers to help — and let the fixer carry the forms rather than your documents. Do not photograph the border buildings or the officers: the border zone is a no-photography area, and phones away at the counters keeps the crossing quick and drama-free.
A Vietnamese SIM covers most of the run, but there are real signal gaps on QL9 around the Dakrong bridge and in the hills before Lao Bao, and the Laos side drops to a different network. Save your e-visa PDF, booking details and the desk's WhatsApp number offline before you leave Da Nang. If the fixer needs to reach the office mid-crossing they use their own phone, which is one more reason to travel with the service rather than alone.
Leave your laptop, camera gear you are not using, spare bank cards and heavy luggage in your room — almost every Da Nang hotel and guesthouse stores bags free for the day, and a locked room or safe is far safer than a van boot at a border car park. Do not plan to leave a motorbike at the Lao Bao gate: there is no secure long-term parking there. Bring only what you need for the day plus your documents.
Dress in light layers: the 04:00 departure and the Hai Van Pass are cool and often misty, midday at the border is hot, and the drive back can turn wet between September and December. A light rain shell in the wet season, and comfortable closed shoes for the 200 to 400 metres of walking inside the border buildings, are the practical essentials. Skip anything you would be unhappy to lose and sandals you cannot walk in.
Confirm your pickup time on WhatsApp, charge your phone and power bank, print the e-visa, get your clean USD, and put your passport, photos and money in one place so the morning is automatic. Set your alarm for at least 30 minutes before pickup, and if you plan to re-enter on an e-visa, check that the approval still shows the right gate and dates. Then sleep — the 04:00 start is the hard part of the day, and the border is easier when you are rested.
There are small shops and a duty-free area at Lao Bao on the Vietnamese side, and basic drinks and snacks in Densavanh, but the only ATM is in Lao Bao town and the exchange rates at the gate are poor. You cannot buy a usable Laos e-visa, print a document, or fix a passport photo at the counter, so nothing that matters for the crossing should be left to the border. Photocopies and photos are a Da Nang job the day before, and cash is a Da Nang job too.
Tet 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February, with New Year's Eve on Friday 5 February and the proposed public holiday running roughly 4 to 10 February. The vehicles and the Lao Bao border crossing run 365 days a year, but Vietnam's immigration department pauses e-visa processing over the holiday, so a new approval filed in early February can sit for a week or more. If your visa expires around Tet, run in late January rather than gambling on a same-week approval.
Before, if you have the choice. Seats on shared vans sell out earlier, the roads are busier with holiday traffic, and the e-visa filing clock effectively stops for the holiday window. Running a week or two before Tet means your new stay is already in place and you spend the festival in Vietnam instead of chasing a stamp. You still have to exit before the expiry date, because immigration does not extend a tourist visa for Tet and an overstay is fined per day under Decree 282/2025. The clean options are to run a few days before the holiday, or to hold a pre-approved e-visa whose start date covers the period and which was filed well in advance. Message the desk early — this is the one time of year when a genuinely last-minute Da Nang visa run is hard to arrange.
Hung Kings' Commemoration in April, Reunification Day and Labour Day on 30 April to 1 May, and National Day on 2 September all shut the immigration e-visa desk, and the border gate is busier with holiday traffic around each. The gate itself stays open, so an exit-and-re-enter run with an existing visa still works on those days. What pauses is processing of any new e-visa, which is why you should file ahead of the holiday clusters.
Central Vietnam's typhoon and heavy-rain window runs roughly September to November, and the QL9 corridor behind Dong Ha takes the worst of it — landslides in the Dakrong hills, flash flooding across low sections, and occasional closures of the La Son–Hoa Lien expressway and parts of the QL1A. The Hai Van Pass can also be restricted in high winds, which is when the tunnel keeps the route moving for cars. If you are running in that window, build a spare day into your visa planning.

Yes — landslides and flooding have closed the QL9 approach and, in the worst cases, the gate itself, and the Laos side sometimes stops issuing visas while the Vietnamese side stays open. If the gate does close, the run is rescheduled at no extra transport cost.
You stay a night and re-enter the next morning. Lao Bao town on the Vietnamese side has guesthouses for around 300,000 to 500,000 VND, and the same range covers basic hotels in Densavanh, with Savannakhet 60 km further west if you want more choice. We can run the trip as a two-day schedule — cross and overnight, then re-enter at opening — at the same transport price. Keep the Vietnam exit stamp and the Laos stamps safe, because they are what you show at the Vietnam arrival counter.
QL9 is a mountain road, and in the wet months the risks are landslides around Dakrong, poor visibility in rain and fog, and long coal-and-cargo lorry convoys through the passes. Drive times can stretch by an hour or more, so an early departure matters even more than usual on a Da Nang to Laos run. Our drivers cover this route several times a week and will reroute or hold rather than push through a genuinely dangerous section.
The desk keeps a recovery plan for every run: a replacement vehicle is dispatched from Da Nang or Dong Ha, and because the route passes several towns with garages the delay is usually a few hours rather than a cancelled day. If the delay runs toward the mid-afternoon cut-off, we convert the trip into an overnight two-day run instead of risking a late re-entry. Keep your e-visa valid for the arrival date and keep the booking chat open.
A refusal at Densavanh usually means a nationality that needs an advance Laos visa, an unacceptable passport condition, or a missing photo — and Laos e-visas are not accepted at land borders, so there is no quick workaround at the window. The handling happens at the counter with your fixer, and the fallback ladder is a night in Laos to re-apply or, in the worst case, an onward flight from Da Nang to a country that does not require the same visa. Because this is rare for our guests, we flag nationalities that need advance paperwork when you book.
You will have cleared the exit stamp, which means the old visa is closed and you are legally out of Vietnam, so the priority becomes a valid re-entry: an approved e-visa valid for your entry date, or a visa-exempt entry if your passport qualifies. Our fallback is a night in Lao Bao or Densavanh and a first-thing re-entry the next morning, with the desk watching your application overnight. Travel with enough cash for one extra night and a phone that works, and no single-day plan is ever truly at risk.
